Glass-fronted wine walls and display cabinets are increasingly specified as a feature in hallways, dining rooms, restaurants and retail spaces. Done well, they show off a collection. Done without proper cooling and glazing coordination, they struggle to hold a stable temperature and humidity behind the glass.

For designers and joiners, the glazing specification, door seals, lighting and cooling system all need to be considered together — not chosen independently and hoped to work.

A wine wall or enclosed display differs from a standard cellar in a few important ways:
Glass is usually the largest single surface, which changes the heat gain calculation
Display lighting adds a heat load that a solid-walled cellar does not have
The unit is on show, so noise, appearance and integration into the joinery all matter
Door seals on a glazed unit behave differently to a solid insulated cellar door
The wall is often a feature in an occupied space — hallway, dining room, bar — rather than a separate room
Each of these needs to be factored into the cooling specification, not treated as a finishing detail after the fact.
For smaller display installations, Encool's La Réserve Plug & Play range integrates directly into the wine wall joinery, with no separate condenser or refrigerant pipework required.
The range covers a serving temperature of 5 to 7°C or a storage temperature of 12 to 18°C, depending on whether the wall is intended for ready-to-drink bottles or longer-term conditioning. Noise runs at 38 to 41dBA, and the unit draws approximately 0.9kWh per 24 hours at 15°C. Cabinet depth starts from 50cm, with multiple finish options, concealed LED lighting for bottle presentation, and a digital lock available. Power supply is a standard 220V/50Hz connection, and the range carries a 2-year warranty.
Larger wine wall installations — a full-height feature wall, or a wine wall that forms part of a larger room — may exceed what a plug-and-play unit is designed to condition. In these cases, a THENOW Air split system such as the VHSN-J15 is a better fit, with the condenser sited away from the display itself.
The VHSN-J15 offers inverter-driven cooling from 0.8kW to 1.9kW, operates as quietly as 38dBA, includes wet-film humidity control, and the condenser can be sited up to 10m away — keeping the compressor noise and heat rejection well clear of the display space.
Which route suits a given project — plug-and-play or a dedicated split system — depends on the wall's total volume, glazing area and lighting load, and is worth confirming with Encool before the glazing and joinery are finalised.
Because glass and lighting both add heat load, and because the door seal on a glazed unit is a different detail to a solid cellar door, these points are worth agreeing early:
Total glazed area and glass specification, including whether it is double-glazed
Lighting type and total wattage, since LED display lighting still adds heat inside the enclosed volume
Door or panel seal detail, particularly on larger sliding or hinged glazed doors
Humidity control suited to the enclosed volume, to protect both the wine and any exposed labels on display
Condenser location and pipe run, where a dedicated split system is used
Getting the glazing and cooling specification agreed together, rather than the glazing being finalised first, avoids a wine wall that looks right but cannot hold a stable temperature.

Where a split system is specified, installation should be carried out by a suitably qualified F-gas engineer. Plug-and-play units do not require this, but ventilation clearance still needs to be designed into the joinery.
